Grade 5: Rules of Four-Part Writing (ii)



In the example below, you see chords Ic and V of C major.



They share a common bass note (G). Chords Ic and V of any key all share the same bass note.

If you wrote Ic-V in 4 parts (SATB), a common way to do it would be as seen below:




There are a few more rules for 4-part writing, in addition to the ones we have learnt.

Consecutive 5ths or 8ths (an interval of a 5th or 8th in two parts followed by another) are not allowed.









Exposed 5ths or 8ths are not allowed either. When two parts move in the same direction and open up to form an interval of a 5th or an 8th, you have an exposed 5th or 8th.







Write (Ic-V) in the keys of F major, D major, and D minor below.
