Grade 4: Rhythms
These are some rhythms you have encountered before.

In early music, a note called the breve was used.
A breve looks like this and has 8 beats.

A breve rest looks like this:

In music you sometimes encounter double-dotted notes. The second dot adds half the value of the previous dot. Look at the example below:
Put in the correct rests in the extract below.
Triplets and Duplets
Triplets mean “play three in the space of two”. Triplets normally occur in simple time signatures, and allow us to fit three notes in a space normally meant for two equal beats.
We also can have “duplets”. They occur in compound time signatures, and allow us to fit two notes in the space of three.
Look at the extract below which is in 6/8. In the second bar each of those duplets means to play “two quavers in the space of three” (they are slightly longer than usual).
